Congratulations to Skyros facilitator Kate Daniels on her new album release ...

We would like to say a huge congratulations to Skyros facilitator, Kate Daniels, who is back on the British jazz scene with her new album!

Kate started life as an actress and playwright but has been a registered psychotherapist for over 30 years, a profession she runs in parallel with her love for music and theatre. She has taught at Skyros Holidays for many years, combining life coaching experience with her passion for pursuing a creative life, helping to inspire others from all over the world.

Her new album, titled Atmospherics, is a collection of freshly arranged jazz standards that capture the late night ambience and melancholic seduction of a style Daniels describes as 'Jazz Noir.' Simultaneously invoking the bright-lights glamour of the 50s icons and the rich darkness of after hours cellar bars, it presents the wide range of Daniels’ vocals from sultry ‘effortless swing’ to ‘haunting and ethereal’ (Just Jazz )

As the daughter of a Hebridean father and an Armenian mother, Kate was intoxicated by contrasting musical influences early on and developed a love of mysterious melodic story-telling; a characteristic inherent within her vocal style and the arrangements on Atmospherics.

Listen out as Kate has been receiving airtime on various radio shows. The CD is to be launched in March 2014. For more information, news, or details of forthcoming gigs, visit www.katedanielsjazz.co.uk

Congratulations on your well earned achievements, Kate!

Don't forget, you can join Kate Daniels at The Skyros Centre in Greece this Summer for her life coaching course Creative Confidence: 5 – 18 July 2014. If you want to re-focus your life or your relationships and you want to have fun and a creative time doing so in the wonderful setting of Skyros, this is the course for you. Find out more here >>

A story of success from the Skyros Writers' Lab in Greece…

We are always delighted to hear a success story from our Writers' Lab participants. And this week we are delighted to introduce author of the Emily Windsnap series, Liz Kessler, on our blog. Emily joined Skyros at the beginning of her writing adventure and has since gone on to publish a New York Times best-selling series. Her books have been translated into over twenty five languages. Read on to find out more about the journey she took …

I’ve always wanted to be a writer.

OK, hold on a sec, let me put that slightly more accurately. When I was eight, I wrote a few poems. One of these, Jinx’s Shop, appeared in my local newspaper and I decided on the spot that I was going to become a writer when I grew up.

What I did in fact become was a journalist and then a teacher. Approximately twenty-five years after my first creative success with that early poem, I finally remembered what I wanted to do with my life.

I was in my early thirties. I had recently made a huge decision to leave a full time job and pick up some freelance work whilst pursuing the dream I had suddenly remembered I’d always had.

I was halfway through an MA in Novel Writing when a few lines of a poem popped into my head. It began like this…

Mary Penelope lived on a boat,
Which was all very well, but it didn’t quite float.
It wavered and wobbled and fell on its side
Whenever she tried to go out for a ride.

As is often the way when deadlines are looming, the poem felt much more interesting than my coursework. I worked on it for three weeks. Then I sent it to a writer friend who showed it to her editor. He suggested I try writing it as a book rather than as a poem. So off I went to do just that.

Only trouble was, by the time I’d told the story of the poem, I realised I’d only written an opening chapter. Now what was I to do?

Well, what I was to do, it turned out, was to go to Skyros on a life-changing holiday.

Here are some things I remember from my time in this magical place…
• Talking to my œkos group about how I wanted to call myself a writer but didn’t feel that I could until I was published – and being given the confidence to define myself in terms of my passion and not my salary.

• Sneaking off into quiet spaces on my own to write the chapter that would become the foundation for my first novel.

• Sitting on a rock looking out at the sea. Watching the way the sunlight danced on the water, and feeling so inspired by this that the description went into my book.

• Writing a letter to myself in which I promised that I would become a published author if I worked hard and kept believing I could do it.

And it wasn’t just these moments. The whole atmosphere of the holiday planted such strength and desire in me that by the time I came home, I had a feeling my life was set on a new and exciting course.

And so it was. I finished the book the following year. Another year later, The Tail of Emily Windsnap was born. Four books followed in this series and went on to be published all around the world.
Since then, I have written ten novels in total and two early reader books. I am just finishing two more and have a contract for another three. My books have been translated into over twenty five languages and sold over three million copies. This is so far beyond what I had ever dreamed of that, even now, I can’t help stopping myself and asking if this has really happened to me.

Would it have happened without Skyros? I’d like to think it might. When I went on the holiday, I was already setting out on a new path and I knew where I wanted to get to. But Skyros gave me the belief that I had it in me to get there and that it wasn’t childish or silly of me to dream of a life where my passion and my job were the same thing. It also gave me an incredible group of friends who would go on to support me and cheer me on every step of the way. (My œkos group still meets once a year.)

The way I see it is that I put myself in front of Skyros and agreed to open up to what was being offered. In return, Skyros shone a torch on my life, showed me the cracks and the dark corners I’d been hiding from, held my hand while I looked round, and then turned its light on a door I hadn’t noticed and invited me to open it.

Over a decade later, I’m so glad I stepped through that door. The journey on the other side has been incredible. And I’m grateful to have been invited to write this blog so I can say something to Skyros that I’ve been wanting to say for the last twelve years.

Thank you.

You're Simply The Best ...

This post is dedicated to all our wonderful holiday participants who are helping us on our quest to raise €20,000 for the Skyros Island Support Fund!

As you may know, Skyros holidays have been raising funds to heat Skyros island’s three schools, the clinic and nursing home during the winter 2013/14 now that government funds have dried up for the purpose.

We are currently working with a local committee on the island who are ensuring that all proceeds reach exactly where they're most needed. However, we just wanted to take a moment to say that we are genuinely touched by the response to our appeal. Since our first holiday in Greece this season, Skyros guests and staff have held an 'Auction of Promises' every holiday. This means an item of value has been donated to the cause, and then the race begins – to bid it out for what you desire most.
Some truly spectacular promises have emerged from the woodwork. Just to give you an example, the list includes a private helicopter flight from Sussex to the Isle of Wight; private photography lessons; writing mentoring; holidays in Brussels, UK, America and South Africa; a personalised cover of the Financial Times; signed novels; workshops with Skyros facilitators; massages; Greek cooking lessons – the list goes on.

Bidders have been incredibly generous, many offering single bids of over €100, and much higher for larger items. One seller offered to buy their items back from the winning bidder for twice what was paid. Another participant at The Skyros Centre very generously matched the entire amount raised in a single auction, which brought the record for the single highest bid up to €1,321.70! At last Wednesday's auction alone €2,900 was raised by Atsitsa Bay. And then, quite amazingly, another potential €2,900 was raised by the Skyros Centre. They must be in tune with each other!

In total the Skyros Island Support Fund has reached €15,800 since its launch in March 2013. At this rate, we may even surpass our goals, which means we'll be able to help with funding the social supermarket that distributes food to those who can’t afford it, and also sourcing medicines.

So a HUGE thank you goes to each and every person who has supported the Fund. You've left us all warm and fuzzy. All we can think is that we are the luckiest company ever – our holiday participants and staff are simply the best!

With best wishes,

The Skyros Team

When the hammer finally came down...
On Wednesday evening, on the terrace overlooking the town of Skyros, the last plate and knife and fork were cleared away, the glasses were charged and Lisa Hennessy picked up a hammer...

She was commencing an Auction of Promises and twenty two participants attending a writing course, a life choices course and an art course had offered both to sell and to buy promises.

Lisa's cry, 'Oh come ON! That's so cheap!' drove people on and she had the habit of letting the audience go silent, letting the moment hang, hefting the hammer, just giving someone the opportunity to sneak in a quick shout as the hammer finally came down...

'Gone... to the man in the corner!'

It was electrifying good fun, and promises appeared out of the woodwork: a painting by Linda Norris, Jules Smith's relationship counselling session, Haley White's tarot reading, Pat Holden's B&B experience in Hampstead, a week in Capetown from Brian Vester and Cat Glennie, a front page of the Financial Times to your own design from Francesca Jakobi, a book cover design from Ruth Bateson, a weekend in Luxembourg from Cornelia Tudor, a weekend in Dublin from Ciara Scott, a set of 6 supervision sessions from Sam North, massages from Bo Borzyskowska, a Reiki session from Greta... wow!

The hands rushed up in the air, and some people were forced to sweat for what they wanted, to the delight of all who watched the battles. When the sawdust, the tears, the blood and the wine were cleared away, over 2,000 Euros had been raised towards keeping Skyros' schools, clinic and nursing home warm this coming winter.

Last winter, this could not be afforded due to Greece's financial crisis, and the winters here are freezing. This message comes with sincere thanks to all who sold or bought - because on both sides of Lisa's hammer, there was the most generous of spirits.

With best wishes,
The Skyros Team

Just like parachutes, by Yannis Andricopoulos

Friends are more important than a flat in Knightsbridge or a Porsche in your garage! Thinking otherwise, Euripides tells us, is nothing less than ‘madness’. For, ‘when joy comes, it’s good to have a friend to share it with. And if sorrow comes – God forbid – the deepest comfort is to see it reflected in the eyes of a friend’.

Having someone who will be ready to walk in when the whole world seems to walk out of your life is a blessing. Dependable as a parachute, he or she will give you exactly what you most need at the moment: understanding, support, encouragement and help.
But friends don’t come easily when we work hard to earn the money to buy what we ‘need’ except that, by the way, what we really need is so often beyond all our efforts. Capitalism is still far away from ensuring the mass consumption of happiness if the latter is disassociated from what is displayed in its cathedrals!

Yet, we need one or two people who know all about ourselves and still adore us! We need, actually, a network of friends. But what do you do and where can you go to find such friends? Online searches won’t do! I would suggest you go on a Skyros holiday.

I’ve taken several holidays myself and, although I have occasionally exchanged email addresses with people, I’ve never contacted or been contacted by any! This did not take me by surprise as sending post-holiday letters is nothing like sending or receiving bills!

But Skyros is an entirely different proposition. It’s where we cease to be part-time humans – at least for a while!

People abandon in Skyros the land of superficiality, sign off the roles their professional or social standing is believed to require and stop playing the old games. The latter, just as Agamemnon, as described by his wife, Clytemnestra, are just like a net, full of holes! They allow, instead, their true selves to emerge and this in the certainty they would still be loved, valued and respected for what they really are. Concern, care and love for people rests in the foundations of it all as much as truth, honesty and trust. And this is what real and lasting friendships are based on.

The freedom to be who you are is a truly liberating experience. It’s also beneficial, not only in the short, but in the long term, too. Skyros is, indeed, the holiday you can take home with you – together with your new friends, often friends for life.

The latter will be there to make sure that you no longer need to worry if, for example, you are ageing, taking, in other words, this vital step to a long life, or if you can’t exactly handle the fact that your body is no longer comfortable in your jeans! They will be there, more seriously, if and when you really need them to join you in joy or when you find yourself in a space where pain is the host.

And this is far more valuable than a Stefano Canturi diamond necklace or a Porsche in your garage!

Skyros is the alternative to our commercialised world, the full-blooded dream of a life that makes sense. Don’t miss it. Join it now. You can do so even from your bed as long as the telephone or the WiFi is within reach!

Is a Life Coaching Holiday Right for You?

Marcia's group at The Skyros Centre
Skyros holiday participant, Marcia Piciotto, recently joined facilitator Kate Daniels for one of Skyros' renowned life coaching holidays at the Skyros Centre in Greece.

With encouraging and expert facilitators, and a charming island location, these holidays are especially welcomed by solo travellers. They offer inspiration, encouragement and support for all those who would like to move towards positive change in any aspect of life, whether personal or professional.

So, what exactly is life coaching? And is a life coaching holiday right for you?

This inspirational piece from Marcia will help you decide if a life coaching holiday is right for you!

Marcia: I came across a book about holidays that change your life, at a time when I was looking for a different kind of summer holiday. The minute I read the description about the Skyros Village Centre, I knew I had found the perfect solution. The location was enchanting – a Greek island no less – and the focus on community was very appealing to me. Added to that was that fact that it attracted solo travellers of all ages.
Not just coaching, dancing too!

I considered both the Writers' Lab and the Life Choices programmes and carefully read the details of all the courses. However, as soon as I read the description of Kate Daniels course, it resonated.  Quote: “Let go of outdated patterns, old fears and self-consciousness ….”  It felt as if the course had been created just for me and where I was in my life.

Cabaret: Marcia sings
Despite a little nervousness and sense of vulnerability on the first day, I soon realized that it was the best decision I could have made. Kate is warm, nurturing and respectful and creates an environment where it felt safe to be vulnerable and to express my feelings, thoughts, fears, needs and challenges. She was extremely supportive when I needed my hand held, while also being very encouraging when I was ready to challenge myself and take steps forward.

I learned so much about myself in those two weeks, being able to see myself and appreciate myself for the first time as others did. I came home with renewed self confidence, the courage to try new things (which I did – I even sang in a cabaret!) and so many wonderful memories and friendships that still sustain me. I had such a wonderful experience that I went back to Skyros again a couple of years later! I can’t encourage you enough to treat yourself to a Skyros experience.

Bring Your Characters to Life with 3 Writing Exercises ...

The Skyros Writers' Lab, rated 'Number 1 of the World's Five Best Writing Holidays' by The Guardian, is well known for its writerly advice.

So we thought we'd bring you some wisdom from Sam North, author of over 8 novels, and facilitator of the June Writers' Lab holiday: 8 - 15 June (£595) to be held at The Skyros Centre in Skyros island, Greece.

Bring Your Characters to Life with 3 Writing Exercises

These exercises are a sure-fire way to improve your writing style and bring your characters to life so that they jump off the page!

1. Take one of your characters for a drive. Put him (or her) behind the steering wheel of an old banger, and while he drives you can interrogate his thoughts, his situation. Now write the sequence again, and put him (or her) behind the wheel of a very new, luxury car, of some description. After leaving the material to sit for a while, read both again and measure your own reaction, as a reader, to the evidence of wealth.

2 Command a character to perform five acts of kindness. Then, make that character even kinder –– until they are kind to a fault. Put them in a situation where their virtue transforms into a vice and that the character's kindness becomes some a weakness it leads to their downfall.

3. Stand your characters next to each other and list in which ways they are similar and in which ways they are opposite to each other, both in terms of their physical attributes, their characters and their deep, unavoidable character traits. It makes a difference to put a rich person next to a poor person, a person with good table manners next to a sloppy eater, a brave person next to a timid person. Once you have made these lists, swap them around, play God. And watch out for any nuggets of a story, of incident, that come to mind as a consequence of this exercise. Make a note of these incidents.

More exercises and advice can be found in the 'Five Analogies for Fiction Writing' by Sam North, now available at The Book Depository. Or, you can follow Sam's 'Five Analogies for Fiction Writing' on twitter: https://twitter.com/fiveanalogies

Writing at The Skyros Centre
Join Sam North at the Skyros Centre on the picturesque Skyros island in Greece for his course 'The Art of Writing Fiction': 8––15 June 2013. Sam's course will explore the large-scale challenges of writing fiction, and then narrow its focus to look at the 'voice' of a novel and style. Only £595, the course includes tuition, shared accommodation, half board meals (usually breakfast and lunch), and morning yoga classes.

Top 6 Reasons to Laugh More Often...

SKYROS, the renowned holistic holiday is featuring a really fun and also enlightening course this July and August on the Greek island of Skyros. It's called The Power of Laughter with Ailon Freedman (www.ailonfree.co.uk) See: www.skyros.com.

Most of us love a good chuckle, and that's exactly what Ailon's course aspires to achieve –– you’ll play comedy games, not to turn you into a world class comedian (although you never know!) but to keep you nourished and enlivened through the great healing power of laughter.

On the course, there’s no aim or performance goal other than to help you develop your emotional and creative laughter muscles.

Check out Ailon's Top 6 Reasons to Laugh More ...

Physical: A good belly laugh massages your internal organs, your belly, your heart and your lungs.

Emotional: Laughter diminishes fear, it transmutes anger and dissolves tension. You’re much less likely to stay angry at someone if they are smiling at you sincerely. And once we stop being frozen in fear or anger, many other emotional realms are possible for us too.

Psychological: Laughter stops you going mad. It allows you to embrace duality; the collision of two incongruous thoughts at the same time in the brain. That’s what a joke is. In an effort to process the incongruity, the brain convulses with what we call 'laughter'.

Social: Not only does laughter help you cement friendships with people you know, it is the best ice-breaker with people you don’t know. A well-timed simple joke allows other people to see that you are someone in a healthy emotional and psychological state.

Communication: The most natural public speakers are often comedians. Why? Because they have learned to befriend their audience through laughter and non-seriousness, to show that they are 'a good bloke' or 'gal' who can just have a chat about 'this and that'. A sense of humour is the best way to bring informality and naturalness to your presentations and speeches.

Spiritual: According to the Eastern Religions, life is 'Leela' – a divine play. When we remember this and are in tune with it, our lives can be more harmonious and manageable because we become more realistic about our expectations and impositions about 'how life should be'.
